REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE 5th OF NOVEMBER
BONFIRE NIGHT
November 5th is almost upon us. Will you be attending an organised event? This is by far the safest way to enjoy the dazzling pyrotechnic displays that many of us enjoy these days. These events should be licensed and have everything in place to ensure they are as safe as possible. Including First aid/medical cover, indeed Medic 1 provides ambulance cover at many firework displays.
Fireworks at home
If you have decided to have your fireworks at home you should make sure that everyone is safe.
Alcohol
Having an alcoholic drink is of course part of many social gatherings, but, remember, you need your wits about you. Save the drinks until after the fireworks and bonfires are finished
Only adults should handle fireworks. If you allow children to have sparklers then they should be properly supervised. Remember, excited children are unpredictable.
SAFETY ADVICE
Follow the instructions on each firework
Light fireworks at arm’s length
Stand well back
Never go back to a lit firework
Never put fireworks in your pockets
Never throw fireworks
Never use fuels to light fireworks or bonfires
Have everything you need to hand including:
A phone to call the fire brigade should the need arise
First aid kit
Running water if possible – if not a plentiful supply to cool burns
Torches
Safety matches
Sufficient numbers of adults to supervise the children
FIRST AID
Someone at your event should have knowledge of up to date first aid, in case of an emergency.
Medic 1 run first aid courses throughout the UK as well as at our Training Centre in North Wales
*
Burns: - the important thing is to cool the burn immediately, preferably with clean running water. Do this for ten minutes.
Have someone else call for an ambulance if one is required
DO NOT pick off any clothing that has stuck to the skin
DO NOT use any lotions or potions
DO NOT burst any blisters
If the face or throat has been burnt this is an emergency. You may need to resuscitate the patient if they are not breathing properly
Prevention is better than cure
So stay safe and have an exciting bonfire night.

*This is very basic advice and is not intended to replace a full first aid course. It is just here to serve as a reminder.
