Secure mental health transport

A dignified, calm and safe journey

Mae angen cyfieithydd Cymraeg ar y dudalen hon. Dangosir y copi Saesneg hyd nes i siaradwr Cymraeg ei gyfieithu. Peidiwch â chyfieithu geiriad y Ddeddf Iechyd Meddwl na PMVA â pheiriant. This Welsh page is waiting for a native-speaker translation. English copy is shown on purpose.

Medic 1 provides secure transport for people with mental health needs and for people with a learning disability in North Wales and the North West of England.

We transport patients detained under sections 2, 3, 4, 135 and 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983, including people detained by the police. We also transfer detained patients between hospitals.

The vehicles are secure cars fitted with Perspex screens, so the journey can be safe and dignified. Crews are trained in PMVA — prevention and management of violence and aggression — including restraint and restrictive interventions.

Each journey is planned around the person.

About these photographs

The photographs on this page are generic examples. They do not show Medic 1 vehicles or staff. They will be replaced when photographs of Medic 1’s secure cars are available.

Who this transport is for

Secure transport is for people who need more support than ordinary patient transport can give.

  • People with mental health needs
  • People with a learning disability
  • Patients detained under the Mental Health Act
  • People detained by the police who need conveyance
  • Detained patients moving between hospitals
  • Journeys arranged by families and carers
  • Journeys arranged by NHS teams, health boards and other providers

We talk the journey through with the people who know the person, then agree the car and crew before we travel.

Secure cars

These journeys use secure cars fitted with Perspex screens. The cars are there so the person can travel safely, and with dignity.

PMVA-trained crews

Crews are trained in PMVA (prevention and management of violence and aggression). That training covers restraint and restrictive interventions.

The aim is a dignified, calm and safe journey.

The Mental Health Act and hospital transfers

We transport patients detained under sections 2, 3, 4, 135 and 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983, including people detained by the police and conveyance from a place of safety after that detention.

We also transfer detained patients between hospitals under section 19.

Before travel we need the legal authority for the conveyance (the completed section papers or authority to convey), the person’s details, the pickup and destination, who is responsible for the transfer, and any risk information the crew needs.

A dignified, calm and safe journey

We plan the journey around the person. Tell us how they communicate, what unsettles them, and what helps them stay calm.

Tell us if a familiar person should travel with them. We will say whether the car and the plan allow that.

Not an emergency service

This is planned secure transport. We can usually mobilise within an hour. If someone needs an emergency response, call 999.

For commissioners and health boards

NHS commissioners, health boards and provider organisations can request a quote for secure transport. Families and carers can enquire too.

We provide this service in North Wales and the North West of England. We can usually mobilise within an hour. If someone needs an emergency response, call 999.

Tell us the legal authority for the conveyance, where the person is, where they are going, and what the crew needs to know. We assess the journey before we confirm it.
