Who books a care home or hospice transfer
This page is for care homes, nursing homes and hospices, and for families arranging a move for someone who lives in one. The journey might be a new admission, a hospital appointment and a return, a discharge back from hospital, a move between two homes, or a transfer to or from a hospice.
It is a private booking. The home, the family, or another organisation pays. It is not free NHS patient transport. A home can book Medic 1 for one journey without an NHS referral.
What a care home needs to tell us
The useful detail is the resident, not a vehicle name. Tell us how they transfer, whether they use a wheelchair or need a stretcher, how they communicate, and whether oxygen or an infection risk needs to be known before the crew arrives. Say who is escorting them. A member of staff or a relative can usually travel when there is a seat.
At the door you will see a white ambulance with yellow and green Battenburg markings, and a crew in green uniforms. Waiting on a hospital discharge is explained on that page. Homes across Gwynedd, Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham, and further afield, are covered: North Wales and throughout the UK.
Hospice journeys
A hospice transfer needs the same facts as any other booking, with a little more care about timing and who is travelling. Families ask us to move someone from a hospice to a nursing home, from hospital to a hospice, or from a hospice to a home address so they can be with family. Tell us whether the person can sit, and whether a relative needs to be in the vehicle.
You do not have to choose a crew grade before you ask. Say what the person needs. A longer move is still the same private service. Homes that book often can ask about an account.
Private ambulance prices
Appointments are where waiting usually appears. If we take a resident to clinic and stay, the first hour of waiting is included and time after that is charged by the hour. A one-way move is priced from the pickup to the drop-off.
Private ambulance transport is £115 per hour, with a 3-hour minimum, so journeys start from £345.
The first hour of waiting is included; after that, waiting is charged at £65/hr.
