Our ambulance and supported transport isn’t limited to local journeys. Medic 1 provides planned long-distance medical, accessible and supported transport throughout Wales and the UK, with selected Ireland and European journeys by prior arrangement.
Long-distance travel can be hard when someone has reduced mobility, uses a wheelchair, needs a stretcher or has medical needs that rule out ordinary transport. We plan the whole journey — vehicle, equipment, staffing and clinical support — from collection to final destination.
UK Long-Distance Medical Transport
We carry out planned long-distance journeys throughout the UK — seated supported, wheelchair, stretcher and clinically supported, depending on assessed needs.
Typical journeys:
- Returning home after illness or treatment
- Long-distance hospital discharge
- Transfer to a specialist hospital
- Moving closer to family
- Transfers between care or nursing facilities
- Relocating to a new care home
- Hospice transfers
- Specialist appointments
- To or from holiday accommodation
- Returning home after becoming unwell away
- Other journeys where ordinary transport won’t do
Returning Home After Illness or Treatment
Becoming unwell away from home leaves families with a difficult problem: the person may be ready to leave hospital but still unable to travel by car, train, coach or commercial transport. We provide long-distance hospital-to-home transport from anywhere in the UK back to North Wales — or from North Wales elsewhere.
This may be right if the passenger:
- Can’t tolerate a long car journey
- Needs a wheelchair or stretcher
- Needs oxygen during travel
- Requires clinical observation
- Has complex medical needs
- Needs a Paramedic ambulance
- Needs mobility or moving and handling support
We can liaise with the hospital team about the passenger’s condition before accepting the journey.
Long-Distance Paramedic Ambulance Transport
Some longer journeys need a higher level of clinical support. We provide a planned Paramedic ambulance where a qualified clinician should be available throughout — for complex needs, recovery from significant illness or long-distance facility transfers.
The need for a Paramedic is assessed individually, and other crew levels are available where appropriate.
Wheelchair & Accessible Long-Distance Transport
Long journeys can be especially hard for wheelchair users. Before travel we consider the type of wheelchair, whether the passenger stays in it, transfer needs, equipment, access at both ends, journey length, whether family or a carer will travel, and any medical needs — planning for comfort as well as accessibility.
Long-Distance Stretcher Transport
For passengers who can’t sit safely or comfortably, we provide stretcher transport over long distances between hospitals, care settings, homes and other destinations. Journeys may last several hours, so we plan positioning and comfort, moving and handling, access, duration, stops, oxygen or clinical needs, equipment and staffing — with a clinical crew allocated where needed.
Planning for Comfort on Longer Journeys
A journey of several hundred miles needs a different approach from a short local transfer.
Depending on the passenger, we plan:
- Comfort and rest stops
- Positioning during travel
- Pressure-area care where relevant
- Toileting and personal comfort
- Food and drink
- Medication
- Oxygen
- Journey timing
- Traffic and route
- Ferry or onward travel times
- Contingencies
The aim is to reduce avoidable discomfort and make the journey as manageable as possible.
Transfers Closer to Family
Sometimes a person needs to move because the people closest to them live many miles away. We provide long-distance transfers for patients and residents relocating closer to family — hospital to care home, care home to care home, hospital to hospice, hospice or hospital to home, nursing home relocations and rehabilitation transfers.
Where appropriate, we work with both organisations for a coordinated handover.
Specialist Appointments & Treatment Further Afield
Some patients need to travel outside North Wales for specialist care — consultations, surgical or pre-operative appointments, diagnostics, rehabilitation, private hospital appointments, treatment programmes and follow-up. We provide wheelchair, stretcher or clinically supported transport, and can discuss return journeys and waiting.
Airport Transfers for Medical or Mobility Needs
Airports can be hard to navigate with significant mobility or medical needs. We provide supported road transport to and from UK airports for passengers who use a wheelchair, need a stretcher for the road journey, need mobility help, have complex medical needs, require oxygen or clinical support, are returning after illness abroad, or are part of a wider medical journey.
We plan around travel times. Airside and airline arrangements remain subject to the airport and airline.
Ferry & Port Transfers
Being in North Wales means ferry transfers are often part of a longer journey. We provide supported and medical transport to and from ferry terminals, including Holyhead, for passengers travelling between the UK and Ireland — home or hospital to port, port to home or hospital, wheelchair or stretcher, clinically supported, and onward travel after illness or disruption.
Ireland Transport
Journeys between the UK and Ireland may be available by prior arrangement following assessment — between homes, hospitals, care settings and other destinations.
Arrangements may include:
- Wheelchair-accessible transport
- Stretcher ambulance transport
- Clinical support on the road
- Paramedic-supported transport
- Ferry travel
- Coordination at both ends
International travel needs extra planning — timing, ferries, documentation and suitability for the journey — so please contact us as early as possible.
European Road Transport
Selected European journeys may be considered by prior arrangement. Each is assessed individually, considering journey length, border requirements, ferry or tunnel, clinical needs, staffing, equipment, overnight rests, handover, documentation and contingencies.
Not every international journey suits road transport; we’ll check it’s within our operational and clinical capabilities before accepting.
Repatriation Following Illness or Injury
Someone ill or injured away from home may be fit to travel but still need specialist support. We provide road-based repatriation within the UK, and consider selected Ireland and European journeys — from hospital to home or care home, holiday destination to home, airport or ferry terminal to home, between facilities, or closer to family.
One Journey, One Transport Team
Changing vehicles or providers mid-journey adds complexity for people with medical or mobility needs. Where appropriate, the same Medic 1 team stays with the passenger from collection to destination — no separate local providers at each end. For families and organisations, that makes a complex transfer far easier to coordinate.
Available to individuals, families, hospitals, care and nursing homes, hospices, private healthcare and rehabilitation providers, and other organisations. You don’t need to know the vehicle or crew required — we’ll recommend the right arrangement.
